Congratulations to the 2023 School of Social and Political Science (SPS) graduates!
Graduation ceremonies for both undergraduate and postgraduate students took place on Thursday 13 July in McEwan Hall. Following the ceremonies, SPS graduates and their families were invited to celebrate at receptions in Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre. The first reception included a performance by the SPS choir, which is made up of students, professional services staff and academic staff.
The reception also included a prize-giving for recipients of the Rachel Howell Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sustainable Development. This new award is given to students in honour of SPS colleague Rachel, who passed away last year. This year, nine Sustainable Development students received the award because of their above-and-beyond dedication to supporting others, strengthening the School community, and exceptional commitment to making a positive difference. Head of School Professor John Devaney gave the students their prizes.
John Devaney said: “I was delighted to see so many final-year students and staff attend the graduation ceremonies last week. While I appreciate the challenges for many students in not having a final award, it was lovely to see students enjoying a day with family and friends celebrating their achievements given all that they’ve been through over the past few years. It was also great to see 21 former students being presented with their doctorates, including current staff members Dr Vasileios Galanos and Dr Ewan Robertson. Thanks to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make the day so special for graduands, and the lovely receptions in the Festival Theatre.”
