SPS academics receive prestigious RSE Research Awards

Four academics from the School of Social and Political Science (SPS) have received prestigious Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) Research Awards.
The RSE, Scotland’s National Academy, runs a Research Awards Programme twice a year to support Scotland's research sector by nurturing promising talent, stimulating research and promoting international collaboration. It offers various awards and grants to support academics involved in a range of research disciplines.
The SPS academics receiving awards are:
- Dr Karlo Basta, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, received a Personal Research Fellowship for his project ‘Corporations against nations: Exploring the political influence of business in independence referendums’.
- Dr Kasia Kaczmarska, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, and colleague Dr Mykola Kapitonenko from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine), received a Research Collaboration Grant for their project ‘Foreign and security policy of Ukraine’.
- Dr Kathy Dodworth, Research Fellow in the Centre of African Studies, and colleague Dr Fathima Badurdeen from the Technical University of Mombasa (Kenya), received a Research Collaboration Grant for their project ‘Voluntarism and State-making in Africa’.
- Dr Mohammad Amir Anwar, a Lecturer in African Studies and International Development, received a Small Grant for his project ‘Hidden underbelly of the Artificial Intelligence systems: Human labour and data work in Africa’.
They are among 60 research projects to be selected for the autumn RSE 2023 Research Awards open call.
Professor Anne Anderson OBE FRSE, RSE Vice President, Research, said: “The Research Awards Programme of the RSE plays a vital role in supporting Scotland's thriving research community. These awardees will help to advance our knowledge, address global challenges, and contribute positively to Scottish society."
