Description
The Centre of African Studies is pleased to invite you to the following Book Launch as part of its series for 2023/2024:
Speaker: Dr Sidy Cissokho, Researcher, CNRS, (University of Lille)
Discussant: Dr Rama Salla Dieng, Lecturer in African Studies and International Development, CAS, University of Edinburgh
Chair: Professor Paul Nugent, Professor of Comparative African History, HCA and CAS, University of Edinburgh
In this presentation, Sidy Cissokho revisits the main results of his research on transport sector in Senegal. Starting from the analysis of the elections of the "Président of bus station", he describes the strong entanglement between the state and the drivers organisations. From this view, this "social contract" not only concerns religious brotherhoods as the academic literature often points out, but also the so-called informal sector and more broadly industrial relations since structural adjustment.
When: Wednesday 29th November 2023 (3:30pm - 5pm GMT)
Where: Please join us at Chrystal Macmillan Building, Seminar Room 1

Speaker Biography:
An introduction from Dr Sidy Cissokho: My doctoral research focused on the relation between the profession of driver and the state, both in Senegal and Ghana. I published various articles and book chapters based on this ethnographic research, dealing with topics such as petty corruption, driving license, trade union elections, urban transport reforms or electoral campaigns in the transport sector. During my post-doc, my research shifted to the making of international policy in the transport sector. I especially studied ordinary work at the World Bank headquarter in Washington D.C. through archives, lobbying practices of business interest groups in West African trough observation. My work mainly focuses on Senegal now, where I have been doing an ethnography of labor law.
