Description

Research estimates that up to 99% of women experiencing domestic abuse have experienced a form of economic abuse from their current or former partner. However, despite this statistic economic abuse remains one of the most under-researched and misunderstood forms of domestic abuse. In this talk, Jenn Glinski will provide an overview of her PhD research which examines the lived experiences of economic abuse of victim-survivors in Scotland and the role of finances in deciding to separate from an abusive partner. Findings include a lack of recognition and support for economic abuse and extensive experiences of post-separation abuse perpetrated by the former partner and institutions such as banks and family courts.

In addition to insights into her research, Jenn will share her experience of collaborating with the financial sector, statutory bodies in Scotland and international institutions to raise awareness of economic abuse and affect change in policy and practice.

Bio: Jenn is a PhD Candidate at the University of Glasgow. As part of her research work on economic abuse, Jenn has undertaken award-winning research collaborations with the Royal Bank of Scotland and was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Violence against Women and Children at Rutgers University in New Jersey in 2020. Outside of academia, Jenn is an independent consultant on economic abuse providing training and strategic assistance to public and private sector bodies nationally and internationally.

Jenn holds an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law and a MRes in Public Policy Research.
